I've just watched Silent Hill, I don't get the ending at all. After the mother & daughter drive home & go into the house. Where are they, what are they, alive, dead, what? I'm confused!! Anyone care to explain it for me?!

I am trying to find out the ending of the film, that's all, I'm sure we all from time to time don't get the end of a film.
If anyone else is going to give me a twattish answer & try to insult my intelligence....basically.......DON'T F*****G BOTHER!!!!

Okay all you idiots that patronise this person for not understanding and then tell her they're dead get you're facts right. if you talk to anyone who has played the game or go to wikipedia or IMDB you will understand that they are alive but in a different dimension. it says in the film that only the dark one can open the doors to it ( the burnt child.) thats why its foggy where they are and why the husband and policeman can't see them and its light when they go there and at the end the husband can sense her but she can't get back coz the dark one won't let her. hope this helps apparently its the way the game goes although its snow not fog (never played the game myself) i know this coz i went on a forum after watching it coz i wasn't entirely sure what was going on and i have an I Q of 156. so all you others go get your 2 points elsewhere or give me a call i'm a psychologist and you all have serious issues.

the mother and daughter are in a parralel diomantion to the real world there not actually dead they at first carn't leave silent hill but at the end she just drives off what we were lead to belive as a cannion thus she has been able to get out of silent hill what you've got to under stand is the devil took her there for a reason that was to panatrate the church were all the manipulation began so in doing so the devil is unable to relese her the only way she can come from the parralel world is for the love between her and her daughter. It was her love for her daughter that made her go to silent hill to stop the sleep walkin.So the ending isn't as much as an ending you could class it more of a beginin as like alot of films leave the end open for the viewers to make there own mind up or leave it open for a sequel

People are being mean 'cos they're as confused as the rest of us ;)
The original Silent Hill for PS1 had four endings (the 5th "ufo" ending is more of a comic relief), depending on how you played out different scenarios in the game. The movie makers intentionally left many questions unanswered so as to let the viewers decide how to interpret the ending.
As some folks point out, they could be dead and just don't know it..spirits living in purgatory, or have entered another dimension where there is no return. I'd say that they are dead and Silent Hill swallowed up any evidence of the wreckage and bodies - similar to Bermuda Triangle. It was demon Alessa's plan from the beginning to leave her innocent self in the orphanage, for the sole purpose of being adopted by a good-hearted person, and later taking over his/her body to gain access to the church. How this innocent baby was conceived is still a mystery (perhaps that 5th ending ^^ is relevant?). Mother is in purgatory because she made a pact with demon Alessa..although she did so with good intentions and thus escapes hell. Cybil the cop most likely is in heaven. It seems destiny has plans for mother, daughter, and biological mom dhalia; plans which we are left only to speculate on...

The only way that they could enter Silent Hill was that they had died and moved onto another plane of existence (in the film version anyway, not necessarily in the Games). That plus the fact that they could only enter Silent Hill 'with the permission of the beast' which the daughter Sharon Da Silva was (being as how she was the illegitimate daughter of Alessa Gillespie and Colin the janitor). The great thing about the Silent Hill series (Film & Games) is that you can pretty much fill in the vagueries yourself, although some of them are obvious. Watch the film a couple more times and decide for yourself.

I enjoyed the movie. It took some time before I realized what really happened to them as well. It is ok you don't know much about the game, apparently you are not a gamer like some of the mean *** freaks giving you ****... I suggest watch the movie again and you will pick up the pieces that you didn't see the first time around.

ok here goes, this is complex so read very carfully, you will not that you saw the mother and daughter drive home and, now remember this, go into the house, now then there is the first clue, they were not taken into the house they drove there and went in thus they are in the house and amazingly dead do not drive or go places so yes thats it they are alive too, wow that was difficult explaining was it not x bye for now, and remember you may be better watching younger persons programmes which have less of a plot.

Sadly they are dead. They actually die in the accident while being chased by the motorcycle cop.

Don't feel bad, I had the same questions, that you did, that is a very very strange movie and the ending is even stranger.

if you have trouble understanding such a movie trying watching "Toy Story" might suit your IQ better.
