The reason is manifold.
1). Relativity: From their perspective they are making a good choice.
2). Ignorance: They do not know of a better choice.
3). Self-Destructive: They pick the choice that will do themself the most harm.
4). Sloth: They are too lazy to make the 'good' choice.
5). Peer-Pressure: They make the 'popular' choice.
6) Spontaneity: They make the choice 'in the heat of the moment' based on emotion or reflex rather than careful thought.

Life is all about choices. We all make bad ones sometimes. Take a look at who's the President of this country...

I dont believe we think, at the time, that the decision or choice is a bad one, its just the best one at that moment.
