If I try to remove my cd-rom, my computer tells me when it's "safe" to remove it, so it is definitly recognizing the cd-rom. However, I can't play any cd's and when I go to "My Computer" and click on the Compact Disc drive, it tells me to insert a disc, even though a disc is in there. I am computer hardware illiterate, so please answer with easily understood terminology. Thanks!

Computers are not very difficult to understand. It has many parts that can break, however.

The CD-ROM usually has two separate mechanisms for determining its content. The first is mechanical one when the concentric (circular) rubber band at the center grasps the CD in order to spin it. This is the message your are getting when you are ready to expel your CD disk. It knows that the CD-ROM has grasped something within it.

The second method is optical when the laser attempts to create reflections off the CD disk. For some reason your laser is not flashing or your optic sensor is not reading the reflected laser beam. This is the message you get when you try to play the CD and the computer thinks there is no CD inside the CD-ROM because it is not receiving any optical readings.

You can think of this as using two different senses to determine an item. You can touch it or see it. In this case the CD-ROM can touch but it can no longer see. The poor thing.

It could have been that the laser broke. My dvd drive lost it's cd laser I think, because it recognizes dvds, but not cds. Mine was probably from a cd that was burning, and it got caught up on the final stage, and ended up burning for over an hour.
