Scientists come up with hypotheses and then test them. Many times, those hypotheses are wrong, so they have to try something else. This may happen many times, but if they keep trying, eventually they'll find the answer to their problem.

For example, Thomas Edison tried over 1,000 different substances for a light bulb filament before he found the right one. That takes perseverance! :-)
