I recently went to get a pap smear and when I got my results the doctor informed me that I had an abnormal pap at level one...........I guess there are different levels of abnormality and as the level increases it gets cancerous. So has anyone else been in this situation? Should I really worry or is it really not that big of a deal? Is there anything I can take or do to make my paps normal?

Don't worry just yet but go for regular exams! Very important! I had abnormal results about 10 years ago. Level 2. I have gone to the specialist every 6 months since then and am still only between level 2 and 3. Not to say someone else won't need treatment sooner but my family doctor told me that sometimes they clear up between pap tests. Obviously not my case but could be yours.

well i went to the dctr like since i was 18 all came back normal even thru my pregnancy then i did it last yr with another new dctr who told me i had an abnormal pap b/c i had hpv :( this was freaking me out, ut she said it could clear on its own now i go back every 6-8 months. its sooo mild that it can go away. if you are sexually active girl. make sure you ask for the HPV TEST it can save your life. it can cause cervical cancer and i have only been with 2 men my whole life.............. dont worry bout it just ask next time to be safe!!!!!

this just means you need to keep an eye on it. so, when you have your pap next year, they compare the results. whether the abnormal cells have increased. but as for now, there's nothing you can do.

Level one does not often progress to malignancy. It is used for reactive cells, after an infection or inflammation, from something as simple as an undetected yeast infection. Usually, the doctor recommends good vaginal hygiene (no, I don't mean douching, but limiting sexual partners, etc) and repeating it in a few months during mid-cycle for a more accurate reading.

Don't worry too much, but don't ignore it either.

Cervical cancer is caused by human papilloma virus. You catch it from infected men, who have no symptoms.

You need to talk to your gyn to find out the degree of abnormality. Sometimes it's a "wait and watch" sort of thing. Other times, you may require treatment such as cryotherapy (freezing), laser or loop excision, or a cone biopsy.

It is something to take seriously, as cervical cancer can kill you if you let it go.

Good luck, and talk to your doctor soon.

There are different levels.

A better option for most women would be to make an appointment and talk to your doctor about what it means for you, and what the next step in treatment is.

And for all women between ages 9 and 26:

GET THE NEW HPV VACCINE "GARDASIL" ! ! ! !

It's the biggest thing in women's health in the last decade, and will prevent most cases of cervical cancer!
