Would a few hours be enough? Or maybe a few days, or a week or so? What do you think and why?

Five minutes :-) Whenever you feel both of you are ready (meaning you and your intended) is the best time! If she's ready, don't make her wait any longer!

I had to wait what seemed like forever for my ring, and it was horrible! Once you've reached the point in your life where you've found the one you want to be with, you've waited long enough. Make it official!

My wife is traditional and expected me to ask her father (and her parents were traditional too).

While I'm personally indifferent and didn't see the blessing as necessary, I wanted to honor her family and build relationships, so I did ask him first.

You can wait as long as you want. Generally, your gf does not even need to know that you've asked -- if you tell her that you have asked, she will be living on pins and needles until you pop the question! :)

Generally, how long you wait depends on how long you waited to ask her father, and when you think the right moment is to surprise her. Days, weeks, a few months, half a year -- whatever you think is best and you can tolerate.

But it's really up to you, unless of course you know the parents have some sort of opinion on the matter and you would like to keep everything on the best of terms with them, or you know your gf would appreciate you asking her at a specific time.

[I asked her dad at a time she hadn't suspected, so she never even had realized I had asked. She was still waiting for me to do it, but I was tricky and snuck it in early. I think I asked her three months afterwards... not sure... but we also had a long distance relationship at the time and didn't see each other much, and I was waiting for Valentine's Day.]

Ask her father and hopefully he gives you his blessing. Then when the time is right, propose to her. And you'll know when the time is right. Good Luck............

Kid, no one asks the father any more. Are you for real? Rhetorical.
