Cremation is becoming more popular because people are changing from traditionalists to contemporary thought. Many people think it is only due to the money issue, but I know of people that do not feel a funeral is the best way for them to dispose of their loved one. Money is a big part of it, but just like cars, it is up to a personal like or dislike. Some like fords while others like chevy's.
Cremation is a good alternative to a more traditional funeral rite, but not a substitute for closure without viewing.

Because the out of pocket cost is far less than a funeral, grave plot, head-stone, up-keep and so on. A nice URN doesn't cost much and you don't need to even buy that if you're going to have your ashes scattered. ALSO...after a few years..headstones can be moved and destroyed as your body has become landfill (most cities don't waste the expense to move graves once a cemetery has been re-zoned for development)...cremation is less of a hassle for the loved ones we leave behind.

For one thing, I despise the idea (now) of rotting in the ground and I already have a plot (cremation plot) in a cemetary and my urn bought. All I have to do now is die and be cremated and I will take up less space, won't rot, and will be put to rest quickly. Plus the cost is like 20-25% of a regular funeral!

Embalming and burial emphasizes the sanctity of the body--cremation emphasizes the sanctity of the soul.

Western thinking reveres the physical, but our body isn't us, so it doesn't seem at all logical to preserve it and make it an object of awe and worship.

After we've eaten a candy bar, we dispose of the wrapper--we don't save it or leave it lying around. Our corporeal bodies are just our earthly wrappers, so it's much better to cremate those wrappers of our souls and remember the person for who they really were. We don't need their bodies to do that--we hold their memories in our hearts.

many people don't feel we need to immortalize the dead like our ancestors did. I will be cremated, and I hope many others will too.

Because it is cheaper and takes up less space in the big scheme of things.

i think its popular for two reasons. fear of being burried and the average burial funeral is much more expensive than just being placed in a nice little urn.

too expensive, too much hussle planning the funeral, the loved one is already dead anyway, he/she can not pick how they want to be buried. I would spend money on weddings, births, and graduations to show my loved ones how much they are appreciated in life.
