According to Geoffrey of Monmouth's work called Historia regum Britanniae ("History of the Kings of Britain", 1137), Merlin was rumored to have been the son of a demon or an incubus and a mortal woman who was a nun. Merlin was probably born in the town of Carmarthen. Because of his link with a demon and God, Merlin had great wisdom and powers from the two opposing forces.

(Well I am quite not sure of what you want to know about so have a look at the link below for your reference. Thanks.)

I'm not really sure what your really asking, but I'll try anyway.

To my knowledge the Cross and Merlin have little or nothing to do with each other. Merlin represented the "old ways" of the druids and alike. As for Merlin's story, well there are many variations (slight as they may be) but basically he was born without a father (sort of the immaculate conception) he was brought before King Vortigern because an adviser told the King that if Merlin was killed his castle would stand. Merlin stated that the reason the castle kept falling down was because it was being built on a stream (in some stories, dragons). Thus begins the relationship between King Vortigern and Merlin. After Vortigern's death Merlin is a consultant for King Uther (Arthur's father).
Merlin is a consultant to Arthur, in some stories Arthur's teacher as a child and so forth.
Different stories depict different levels of Merlin's power, some say he had great power and others mention only very little power.

Merlin was a druid who was looking for a future King of England the would unite the christian and pagan people(sound familiar) and keep the best of both.
