Core compentencies? They beat the hell out of everyone else at procurement and logistics. Now the some of the procurement is pure size... but they are able to dictate terms of doing business to their vendors (and its a lot of business!)... often requiring vendors to change their business practices as a result. There's no doubt that when you go to Wal-Mart you get merchandise on the cheap. This is a direct result of them getting better buys.

Logistically, freight flow, warehousing and information systems are just crazy good. How many hundreds of stores do they have? And how huge are they? Serviced by how many trucks? To be able to move that kind of volume (and remember we're talking about coffee makers, pencils and paper towels here... so there are a lot of units)... they're a monster there for sure.

Core competencies are those capabilities that are critical to a business achieving competitive advantage.

So I would say, in my own biased way:
1. Outsourcing
2. Profit before employees
3. Usurious health care plans
4. Ability to undercut small business

In my opinion, they grew fast enough to out-live everything they ever promised they were all about, example, trashed the american textile industry almost single handedly !

When they went in business they advertised American Brands,
now those brands have sold out and mfg. off shore, textiles just being one example.
