For no apparent reason my pc won't turn on. At first I thought it was a loose wire but it wasn't, I checked. Anyway, the thing is I have some very important work saved there. If the problem cannot be solved, is there any way of retrieving my work at all? Tks

If you have never worked on your computer the problem is most likely with the power supply. Any general computer knowledgeable person should be able to Slave your drive and retrieve the data off of it (if your computer is newer then it will be automatically be set to CS mode on the HD which means if they put it in the computer in the right order the computer will slave it automatically.) I would recommend either having an on-line technician stepping you through diagnosing a true PS problem or fronting the $70 to have a general computer technician retrieve the data to a DVD for you. Usually a computer technician will charge $70 to move the entire HD to a DVD set. However prices can vary in your area.

You can optionally go to your local computer store and let them know the make and model and they should be able to supply you with a PS, you can also put up the $70 as a down payment for diagnoses and then pay the repair bill after authorization, It might be a better idea to scrap the machine and purchase a new one and just slave the drive or have them do a DVD set for you.

You may want to try a different wire and if that doesn't work a new power supply. If they both do not work the only thing you could do is remove the hard drive and put it into another PC to get it to work... Best Of Luck to ya I know computers can be aggrevating!

If it doesn't power on, then either the Power Supply is not working or the motherboard is shot, YES, you can take the hard drive out, and set it to slave on the jumpers, to someone elses PC, and use any free data recovery app to pull the information and save it. Restoration is a good Program and Free..So is HDClone, the HDClone is what you use to transfer the files.. Good Luck

A good computer technician can retrieve your work from your hard drive, where it is saved. He can probably find the problem too. How did you get on this site?
