Yes, it's true. Yahoo will de-activate your account if you don't sign in for four months from the date of your last log in. Hotmail does this too, although I'm not sure of their time frame. You can always reactivate the account. The email will be deleted though. It's best to log into the account once a day. If not, at least 2-3 times a week to keep the account active.

Might depend.

If someone pays for email service, let's say, once per month on an ongoing contract, I would expect that the service provider has no right to cancel the service. Kind of like if someone pays rent on an apartment, the landlord shouldn't care if no one actually lives in it.

On the other hand, if a service gives out free email accounts, usually in exchange for advertising services, then that provider might reasonably expect people to sign in once in a while, since the advertisers who pay for the sevice would want a certain number of people to see the ads. In this case, if the policy states so, then they can do it.

Look at the Yahoo, TOS, terms of service.

Your answer is as good as mine. Common sense would tell me that if it's your own E-mail address you're talking about, "Yes" it will cancel out by your not using it even for one day without signing out. Sometimes I forget to sign out and when I check my mail the next day, I have to sign in all over again. As for E-mail addresses that you have on file in your address book, I think they will always be there even if you don't use them in a while. Hope this helps you.

Based on my experience only -
I didn't sign on to 2 of my Yahoo accounts for 3 months after my dad died.

Yahoo allowed me to reestablish the free accounts, however I lost all the pictures, etc., that I had been storing on those accounts. Now I make sure I check those accounts every 2 months.

I'm sure other email programs may have similar policies.

Possibly, it has happened to me in the past, but it's very unlikely. If you don't use it for like 6 months or something? Yeah, some e-mail servers don't like to have a ton of unused screen names taking up space at their data centers. Places like AOL keep it forever unless you cancel.

Depends on the provider. I have an email address that must be used at least every 30 days or it goes kaput.

Yes and that time varies between providers... I think 90 days for yahoo... but most will let you reinstate it for a period of time after that
