Goth has androgony, and the ankh is the symbol of female. And there are undercurrents of paganism (in the Davinci Code sense - sacred feminine.

The original meaning of this Egyptian symbol is also not known. One suggests that it combines the male and female symbols of Osiris (the cross) and Isis (the oval) and therefore signifies the union of heaven and earth[citation needed]. As a hieroglyph, it likely encompassed a range of meanings depending on its associated hieroglyphs but all of these expressions centered around the concept of life or life force.

Over time, the ankh certainly came to symbolize life and immortality, the universe, power and life giving air and water. "Its keylike shape also encouraged the belief it could unlock the gates of death." The Coptic Christians used it as a symbol of life after death[citation needed]. The ankh has been used in ritual magic.

It also appears to be a 'cross' between a crucifix and the 'christian' (flat) fish symbol which is also represented as determining a point of origin and a vanishing point by drawing two curves around the three main pyramids[citation needed].

Two ankhs could therefore represent two crossed fishes being a combination of the symbol for Pisces and a crucifix

There are several different reasons they do it

1) They are followers of Christianity or ancient Egyptian religion. Many goths are Christians, or have strong ties to the Christian faith, so they are simply showing their faith. There are some goths who have an affinity for the ancient Egyptian religions, and they show their beliefs by wearing an ankh.

2) They think it looks good.

3) They admire in what the cross an ankh represent. The cross is a pre-Christian symbol, which represents protection and/or everlasting life, which is what the ankh represents. Goths, like most people, like the idea of everlasting life, whether it is in this form or in the afterlife. In short, the symbols speak to them.

4) Goths tend to have an affinity for the ancient, and both symbols are ancient. This gives them a tie to the past in a simple & beautiful repersentation.

Goths are not Satanists. Although goths have no set religion, the gothic outlook is not compatible with Satanism. Goths see and comprehend the pain & evil in the world, so what sane goth would want to see that pain increased? Some pseudo-goth mixed up teenagers may claim to be Satanists, but real goths aren't.

You seem like a very ignorant person. Regardless of you having Goth friends that are "satanic" or against religion, it does not mean that ankhs are satanic. You should do your research before labeling anything, besides as far as the ankh is concerned it represents eternal life and rebirth according to Egyptian hieroglyph and symbolism. I'm not sure of any other deeper meanings of the ankh but that is one of the things it stands for based on what I've read.

"goth people" are generally not satanic at all. in fact in my years of hiring at a convenience store years ago, I found that "goths" made better employees. They were more likely to be depressed, but less likely to steal and come to work high. It seemed that, true to their contrary natures, the liked to do what was not expected. The ankh is a sign of life that predates Christianity. Often when goths wear crosses, though, I think it's rather more of a fashion statement than a profession of faith. But these kids like shock value, not evil.

Yeah, there's a million reasons dealing with the symbolism behind it, but here's what it boils down to: Ankhs look cool.

Most also don't have a clue what an ankh is they just see others wearing it so in order to be "different" they also wear one.

the ankh was a symbol closley associated with Osiris, god of the Egyptian underworld.

BTW, goths are generally fasinated by death/afterlife subjects, (which are what most religions are fascinated with as well)...
Satanists worship the devil; the two may have some overlap, but they are not one in the same.
