i used to be able to burn dvds to dvd-rw discs, using nero smartstart. but now, if i try to burn certain films, that are avi type, it comes up with an error message, something about mpeg 4 decoding, can't remember exactly what it says. does anyone know what happened, why it just suddenly stopped burning, and what i can do to get it to burn again? preferably without me having to pay out a lot of money? thanks in advance.

To burn AVI files in Nero you need an upgrade called Vision Express 3.

You can download it from the Nero website for a small fee, dont bother trying to get it from Limewire etc as you need a new key only available from Nero.

If you just want to dump the avi file to a dvd rom so you can open as a file again from PCs, make sure you choose the dvd-rom but not the dvd video when you start.

If you do want to make dvd videos, then your source avi files should be encoded in the right format. (see help file of nero for details)

Probably it cant encode the files, try burning WMVs or alrady converted MPEGs onto the DVD. you can convert the video files using a video editing software. You can even use the software to burn the film onto a DVD.

If you are burning films that are avi's than make sure you select to write them as Data DVDs and not DVD-Video.

You are getting problems because nero is trying to convert your avi film (alot smaller than a dvd) to a full dvd (mpeg 4).

Try burning as a data dvd.

(You won't be able to play avi's on your dvd player unless you convert your avi, a good program is tmpgenc, download here http://www.tmpgenc.net )
