Iam thinking to sign up with directTV basic service beacuse i get extremely poor local broadcast. i understand direct TV will give you a receiver to receive their broadcast. but when the contract ends, the TV receiver will be returned, the only thing left is the disk can i then still be able to receive local broadcast using the disk on the front lawn as an antenna?

I would guess probably not. The box unscrambles the satellite feed. Without it you'd have to be able to hack the satellite to receive the signal and that's illegal.

NO, But you could use it to talk to Martians and UFO's. That's what it will be worth, once the contract ends. Good Luck
