Are you studying life in the US or in England during this period?
Here's a couple of great books (I'm a social history freak). Trust me---they are ALL great reads; you'd probably like them, even if it wasn't for homework. Check your school and public libraries first; all should be available through Amazon.

If it's England, you ABSOLUTELY have to get your hands on a copy of _Inside the Victorian Home: A Portrait of Domestic Life in Victorian England_ by Judith Flanders. She goes through a house, sector by sector, covering EVERYTHING and its impact on daily life. There's a goodly chunk of space given to lighting types and changes (see index).

Daniel Pool's _What Jane Austen Ate and Charles Dickens Knew: From Fox Hunting to Whist---the Facts of Daily Life in 19th Century England_ has extensive commentaries on daily life (including lighting!) in the first section, followed by a good glossary in the back. (It certainly makes English Lit a little more understandable, if you know something about the social context.)

For American household technology during that time, there are two classic books which will also provide good info:
_More Work for Mother: The Ironies of Household Technology from the Open Hearth to the Microwave_, by Ruth Schwartz Cowan. Also see _Never Done: A History of American Housework_, by Susan Strasser.

Good luck, and have fun reading. You can't imagine how fascinating it can get, reading about "everyday life" in other times. Imagine being a servant girl, and having to move over a ton of coal in buckets over the course of a week or so, IN ADDITION to all your other tasks! (According to Pool, a 30-bedroom mansion in N. England could go through that much in a DAY--p. 193. Ouch.)
