In the story the maiden had long golden hair. It could have be two plaits? The only answer to fully understand the question is to read the story. Its a very short story. It won't take long.

The only thing I remember she offered was her first born. I believe he suggested it and she was desperate enough to agree. Why don't you just get a copy of the fairy tale and read it?
