My computer died during a power surge. It went blank...made a beeping and buzzing sound coming from inside it, and would not come back...

I tried F10 for system recovery and it worked. It worked for three days and died again....

I ran F10 again and it came back, but this time it was very jerky and slow...then one day later it totally died....buzzing sounds back, beeping, black screen etc...

Now I get my desktop and nothing else. It won't move...the buzzing sound is back, F10 won't work and it seems to be burnt.

Someone told me if I can get to the desktop, even though I can't get another thing, not even in DOS mode, can't even get to DOS mode...then it's alive. I don't see it as a happening thing. I feel if I pay big money to fix it, it will die again in due time...and it will be only be guarenteed for 30 days.

Next time I'll fully insure the new one and not allow this to happen again. This computer is only 13 mos old and WAS loaded...had a new graphic card installed too.

Does anyone think it's worth the money to have it fixed? IF IT can be fixed?

It may be worth saving, it could be the motherboard or the CPU that's causing the problem or the Processor also, have it checked, find a technician that will use a POST Card to detect the specific problem, find a tech that will give you an estimate for free, that way if it's beyond repair then salvage the parts, Good Luck

First, you are much better off investing in a surge protector meeting the UL 1449 standard, which provides a minimum level of protection against power surges, than paying a premium to have your new computer insured against power surge.

Second, the cost of fixing your computer depends on which component has been damaged. Commonly reported damages due to power surge include keyboard lockup, damaged motherboards, and complete data loss. Based on your description, it seems few components on your motherboard has been fried. Bad motherboards are replaced instead of being fixed. A new motherboards usually cost less than $100. A second distinct possibility is that your chip (CPU) has been fried. Chips usually run two to four times the cost of motherboard. A third distant possibility is that your graphics card went bad and you see nothing on the monitor.

Your best bet is to have someone with an experience building computer take a look at it. If you did not have such a friend, you might try an independent computer store operator (a disappearing breed) who usually have spare computer parts that can be used to diagnose and help fix your computer on the cheap side. I would not pay a major computer box store to take a look at it as it usually is not worth the trouble.

A lot of computers carries 12 mos warranty but a number of branded computers like DELL, HP, etc have 3 years warranty. If it's still within warranty try to have the manufacturer fix it. In our country you can have the computer diagnosed for free and they will tell you how much you have to pay to fix it if you agree. But again it will depend on you if what is inside your PC is valuable to you to have it ressurected. Who knows it may only just be the power supply depending on the damage. Try to use AVR or UPS the next time to avoid this. Good luck hope I help a little.

Loud buzzing sounds are from bad fans.

Beeping and black screens, is probably the cpu temperature monitor working like it should, so I am guessing the CPU fan is bad, and you can get a new one at BestBuy, Circuit City, etc... for about $20...

Good luck, hope that is all that is the matter with it!

The only thing that may be wrong is your hard-drive. I had a power-surge problem I didn't have surge-protector, and the only thing damaged was my hard-drive. If your computer boots to the bios your CPU, Memory, and your Mobo is probally still working.

Don't spend any money on it until you have had it checked out by a competent computer tech.

Just buy a new hard drive. The thing's probably busted.

take it in and ask for an estimate on cost to repair first and then decide if cheaper to buy new.
