I am a sophomore in high school. In our English class we took a readin comprehension test thinger and I scored as being able to read around 550 words per minute with a relatively high comprehension. I am not surprised about these stats or anything.. just trying to give you a better picture of my situation. So, we each had to pick out a free read book for the class. I want to get involved in the Dark Tower series as it seems so alluring to me..
I guess the real question is, I know I can handle the story, but is the content (R material type stuff?) so bad the teacher will tell me "No, you can't read that?"
I mean.. I'm sure swearing and "scary/dark" material is fine. I guess I'm asking if there is alot of gruesome or sexual content.. We did read Go Ask Alice which I guess would be classified as pretty minimal sexual content compared to other stuff, but I really just need advice.
To bring, or not to bring. That is the question.

Go for it. All the teacher can say is no, right? If teach says no then I would advise having a backup book.
By the way, the Gunslinger series is awesome. Fantastic.
Better than that. You will absolutely love it. Happy reading.
It is a wonderful thing that you are a reader. There is nothing much better in life.

The series is pretty violent and gruesome so keep that in mind if you are going to be presenting something on it. The first book I seem to remember being much tamer than the rest of the series though so you might not have much trouble with it. Although personally I think it's the worst book of the series, some of the other books are pretty good...2,3,4

Hey man, the series is awesome. Damn right you can handle it, it's pretty light stuff, but with a few compelling images. If the teacher says no, screw em, read it anyway and do the assignment on something else.
Do it on "The Illuminatus Trilogy" She'll have no idea what that is, so she can't say no. And it's friggin out there, way high on the sexual content meter.

Congratulations fellow reader! Keep reading. The Gunslinger is a great collection of stories. I would hope a teacher wouldn't think it is too much - bring it! Worst they can do is say no. There really isn't too much "R" rated stuff in there - I can recall light sexuality - war-type violence, but nothing terribly over the top.
Keep reading! You're in excellent company.

if the teacher states you can not read the series due to any content in those books , then you might as well tell teacher you can no longer watch the news , because there are alot of worse things on tv then what is in those books . excellent series . stephen king again has done wonders putting on paper what is in his magnificent mind and soul .

Read the books.
THe language is not bad.
It is my absolute favorite series. I am currently on my 3rd reading of the series and am finishing up the last book.
Roland's world calls to me.
There is minimal sex in this series and most of it takes place in the third book. You have seen more on tv and in the movies.
It is not explicit sex that you will be reading.
I hope you take on the challenge of reading them and get as much pleasure from them as I have.

It can be very violent at times and there are some graphic descriptions of sex. It's not porn or anything, but it can be graphic. Also there is some reference to drugs. However, if you are a King fan, don't pass it up. The writing is simple and beautiful and the characters are intriguing and believable. I actually cried at the last book.

No, very little language in it or sexual things that are going to upset your teacher. Go for it - I have read them all - once you get started you will want to read the other 6.

First there are 7 volumns, and yes there are some very graphic and not too pretty sexual discriptions. You be the judge.
