nematocysts are structures found in animals of the phylum cnidaria. They come in all forms (barbs, hollow spears, etc.), their main purpose is to protect the animal from predators and aid in the collection of food. Some of them are connected to a small poison sac, which in some cases is harmful to large animals like humans.

Nematocysts are cellular structures contained in the nematoblasts.The latter are called stinging cells that occur in cnidarians.Nematocysts are polymorphic with cnidocil and a thread and some have a toxin called neurotoxin.Hydrostatic pressure causes nematocyts to be discharged. They are used for a variety of purposes including capture of prey to killing of enemy.
