to just dismiss the city as a possible tourist destination/point of interest for visitors? Yes, the city has lots of problems (urban decay, gangs, drugs, violent crime, etc), but so does every other large city- NY, LA, Chi-town, Miami, the Big Easy, Hotlanta, etc.- and noone thinks twice about these places being popular tourist destinations. I can argue Detroit (especially if I add its' suburbs) has as much to offer tourists as almost any of these other places (museums, clubs, bars, restaurants, sports, performing arts, the zoo, constant festivals and cultural events, etc). Why do so many people- especially suburbanites- automatically have nothing positive to say about Detroit to others; these same people argue the city has nothing going for it (when it actually has a lot to offer)and yet continue to sabotage Detroit (and the whole metro-Detroit area for that matter) with their criticism from becoming/redeveloping into that major city/metro area that they would like it to be(come) ?

ok, i live in the subs and grew up in harrison twp which is boat town in michigan. mostly expensive houses and all that, but i did not move there till i was 6 years old. I lived on barham? near outer drive. It was not bad was i was young. I am 24 now. I think Detroit is a great city and since they built the new ball park it keeps getting better. We went to a game like three weeks ago and as we parked in the DMC lot where i work, i noticed that they were redoing all those old houses and built new condos. I love it. I love mexican village, greektown. You are right but i will be honest from views of other peers of mine.
They feel that it is not the old generation that is ruining detroit but the new ones. Think about it. Detroit was beautiful back in the day. now everyone in on welfare, low income housing, jobless, and many woman are single parents with several children. meaning more than the average of three. This was just in the news. Many people assume that detroiters are lazy, inexperienced and ignorant. This is not true. I think if someone by the name of kilpatrick steps his game up and supports other detroiters and helps with the schools and these dumb *** arrogant, and selfish teachers, it would be nice again. But please keep in mind, many people from where i live, think that in 20 years white people will take over detroit because now that detroit has fallen apart for a minute, there are several african american families heading to the suburbs. now what is that????? that is because our cities have more jobs, educational opportunities and security. either way i just wish people would shut up about detroit and actually start doing things. actions speak louder than words. like i said i am for the new detroit and i go there alot... however as i drive there it smells, buildings are boarded up, broken windows, burnt buildings, you know ....but i am with you but then i am not. im in the middle. i just wish everyone would get off there asses. no matter what your race or your location and just help. i hope i dont offend you, i am not like that and i feel bad that people cant come there like they use to but down town is still my home !!1:)

That's a good question. Maybe it's the crime and the depressed neighborhoods. So it just has a bad name..I live in Grosse Pointe Park and a block over from me is Detroit. It's not safe and I hear gunshots every night. That's the truth...But I do have faith that one day it will get better.. I also don't think people realize that we have a huge metropolitan area with tons of stuff going on besides the city of Detroit.. Also the unemployment rate in the area is high....BUT its no different than any other major city..

To be perfectly frank, I don't like the way I'm treated by African-Americans who live in the Midwest, and Detroit has a lot of African-Americans.

Sounds like they've been there. It's been quite a few years since I drove through Detroit, but when I did it was like a visit to Hell. And if you decide to visit Detroit, be sure it's during the day. Night on Detroit streets can be scarey.
