I have a friend who has only seen KG3 and Taal. She wants suggestions for what she should watch for a good "basic" intro to Bollywood.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Lagaan, Fanaa, Baghban, Paheli, Swades, Bluffmaster, Bunty aur Babli

These should keep her busy for a while. I'm in the process of introducing my friends to Bollywood movies and these are what I've started with for them. They enjoy them and they want to see more.

Mira Nair is a Bollywood director that also makes films in Hollywood (e.g. Vanity Fair w/Reese Witherspoon). She made a beautiful movie called Monsoon Wedding that I absolutely love. The best part? It's NOT a musical, unlike sooo many films that come out of the region. If you want a good starter musical, see Lagaan. It has two of the biggest Bollywood stars in it and it's visually stunning. If you want classic, brainy Bollywood film, pick up the Apu trilogy directed by Satyajit Ray. It is the most famous art-house/film student film to come out of the region.
