For one thing Steve was not out to win a lottery. Even if he had almost ani inherent bent towards taking chances all of these were calculated chances and he was fully equipped to take them.His jumping on the backs of crocs,muzzling them etc. In this case here he was not consciously out to take on the stingray or he would have taken adequate prcautionary measures.He chanced to roll over him and a usually docile though potentially dangerous fish turned somersault.He must have died on the spot.

Yes, the odds of death caused by sting ray could be compaired to winning the lottery, but it's pretty heartless to do so.
