Practice squad is a way to keep players that aren't quite good enough to make the regular roster for developement. They practice with the team but other than that not much. Other teams can sign the players on the squad but might not get them if the original team re-claims them onto their team.

It is the practice squads duty to imitate the upcoming opponent in practice. Some of the big money schools and pro teams even put them in the correct color jerseys. Buckeyes practice squad has been wearing Texas Orange this week.

During the regular season you play football in practice but you are mostly there to beat on and get beaten on by the starters. You hope at some point your play catches the eye of the coaches and the take you off the practice squad and you get to play on the regular squad.

It's just a way for NFL teams to keep players for development, to practice against, and to eventually fill roster spots for injuries.

They get to have a job, and in time can work their way on to a roster.

Something like a junior varsity team, or the very end of the pine bench...
