The points help you to gain levels. Levels allow you to answer more questions per day, ask more questions, and vote on the best answer more times per day.
Also, at level two you have the ability to select if a response is good (thumbs up) or bad (thumbs down). If selected as bad, the response gets hidden and you don't have to see what the moronic answer was unless you click a 'show' link for it.

After you reach 25,000 points you can trade them for a Twix bar and start over.
