so, I am already wired for DSL. Does anyone else have this setup? I have called Yahoo DSL and they said that I still have to go through the phone line to get DSL. However, since my computer is in my bedroom, going through the DSL jack seems much easier (and should in essence, be easier for the company to install) Any thoughts/ help?? Thanks so much.

BTW, I have tried to plug into the DSL line to my computer and I wasn't able to log on.

Ok, lol maybe it's not a DSL jack.

I will explain what it looks like:

It looks like a phone jack but is about twice as wide. I am assuming it can be used for Internet access... not sure which kind. Is it a cable modem?? Pls help!!

Sounds like they are Ethernet jacks, not DSL. DSL is carried on the same line as your phone into the apartment. You then need a DSL modem to separate the DSL signal from the regular phone signal. Then you would connect the modem via Ethernet cable to your computer, or from the modem to a router then to your computer. The Ethernet jacks are not used for DSL, unless there is another location where the phone line is being split into the 2 signals, and the DSL signal is going to the jacks. You would have to check with the phone company and see if a previous install had a separate line for the DSL.

I'm not really sure what you mean by DSL plugs. A DSL works like this. Phone (analog data) and DSL (digital data) travels through the SAME phone line. Digital data uses a higher frequency than analog data so they are effectively using two separate "channels". This is why you need to install a DSL filter to filter out the unwanted frequencies.

A DSL connection looks exactly like the connection you use for your telephone. It uses a phone jack to connect your DSL modem and then DSL modem to your computer via either an ethernet connection or sometimes USB connection.

So technically, you do NOT have a DSL jack. You have a phone jack that is carrying both phone and data at once. (This is why you are able to use your phone and DSL at the same time.)

I hope this clarifies how DSL works.

Ok. You can use a regular phone jack to connect to Dsl but you will need a dsl jack on every phone jack in your apt. There are 2 types of filters..1st one is something that is just that- a filter for your phone and connects between your phone and jack. 2nd is a filter that plugs in to your jack but on the other end is a dual plug in...one for your phone and one for your dsl(wider plug known as rj 45 plug) which connects to your computer. If you do not use a filter on every jack you will have interference on dsl or phone(usually phone). You can install the filters your self...everything is stick and click. Your dsl modem should have a cd which help installation run smoother. Att has promotion of 12.99 per month for 12 months. Use code lr7923.

DSL is brought to you thru your phone line. You use the supplied filters to split the phone traffic and the data traffic. Use the appropriate plug in filters for either phone or computer where you want to setup either of them.

Just call the ISP, tell them what you want, and they will take care of everything. They'll set up your modem, phones, everything.
