I'm considering using a small boat to commute to work through a harbor. The distance would be 8 miles, and the speed I'm allowed to go is 5 knots (slow as hell, I know, but it's still shorter and quicker than driving). I'm only worried that the boat would use more fuel than my car (28mpg).
Would anyone know?
Thanks.

Good grief no. The boat with a 5 HP outboard motor will probably use about 3 gallons of gas for a 5-6 day period, or less. Besides, you have other expenses driving your car. How about oil, tires, wear and tear? You'd be better off using the boat. Hey! It would be much more healthy also. Have fun boating from a boat owner and lover. (of boats) LOL!

With that motor, make sure you use the correct ratio of gas and oil. It's on the can of oil...............or you can buy pre mix at any marina. Down here in Florida, it's about as cheap to fill the tanks at a marina and it's mixed properly.

man I'm thinking you'd use at least 1 gallon of gas..

dunno how long the trip would be by car. so it's hard to compare.
But things like wind against you, surface of the boats bottom (resistance) waves, ect all take a part into the calculations.
