How do I make my urls on my address bar more compact? I hit "go" and it expanded-now smiley icon is gone.

My address bar was small-compacted. I hit go, and now I have lost my smiley program. How do I compact the address bar again?

I'm using Internet Explorer. Yesterday, address bar went from small, compact to long across screen. I think it's hiding smiley icon. How to "uncover" icon-make address bar small again?
