Why are you removing your fish to clean your tank? You don't need to do that. All you should do is scrape the inside glass for algae, then siphon the gravel until approximately 30% of the water is gone and then replace that 30% of water with fresh dechlorinated water that's close in temperature to what's in your tank already.

That said, koi really ought to be kept outdoors in a pond unless you're going to dedicate a LARGE aquarium to one all by itself. These are very large fish.

it happens to me tons of time. i asked myself that question too. i went to the fish store and ask the saler that question and they told me not to refill the water but leave it the way it is and add a little more if you want.now whenever i bought the koi i leave the water the koi live in. so don't change the water next time cuz they're not used to the water they're in. wait about 2 or 3 days until they get used to the enviroment.

Just some basic questions. What are you using to clean the tank with? Are you conditioning your water? Getting rid of the chlorene and the chlorimides.

chances are it was ph shock. Nothing kills a fish quicker then ph shock. Do you clean your tank readily, and was this a new fish from the store, or an already established fish?
