I know of no serious chess-player (and I know hundreds - don't ask!) would be seen dead with anything but a triple weighted rosewood or boxwood Staunton chess set. A friend of mine (non-chessplayer, obviously!) spent £1000 for a Star Trek set where he received one piece a month for 3 years!!! Can you imagine having 31 pieces and dying for a game!!???
Save your money, buy the Lord of the Rings book and a cheap, but good quality, wooden chess set - you'll enjoy playing it better and are more likely to impress!

Just get a few pieces that you like for ornamental value, it's what I'll do. The Witch-King of Angmar and Gothmog for instance.

I got one as a gift Christmas 2004. It's a pretty nice set, though I'm new to the game and it was hard to tell which characters were which level.
Then the giver borrowed it, and I haven't seen it since...
(sigh)

no way man!
don't do it!
it's a total rip-off!
Get one piece a month for a few years paying like £5 a shot?
Thats a really expensive chess set.
All these monthly 'collection' things are a con
AVOID
