yes i was told it stems from the war the guys outside of trenches n tunnels couldn't smoke ,for fear of lighting up their where abouts.So they would say FAGS to the others to let them know they were going inside For A Good Smoke . Its also where the fear of third light came in.1st glow alerts the enemy 2nd they take aim 3rd they shoot.This was told to me by someone who lived it.

Yea, we do all the time, the US meaning is almost never used here.

It's even more amusing considering in some places in the North 'to bum' is slang for 'to borrow' (well, I don't find it that amusing in itself, considering 'cigarette' is the word that immediately comes to my mind when I think 'f ag', but knowing how it could be taken by people unused to our usage of 'f ag' is funny).

Yes we do, but we are also familiar with your meaning of the word, as a put-down for gays.
Here's one for you - you call a butt a 'fanny', and wear 'fanny-packs' to keep cash and personal items in. To us in the UK, a 'fanny' is what a lady has, but a man doesn't. We call your fanny-packs 'bum-bags'.

yeah we do. Their is also a type of food - kind of sausage I think - which are called faggots. I'm british and still find that hilarious. I'm obviously pretty juvenile.
