As far as shred guitar Petrucci is definitely up there, though Paul Gilbert plays with more humor, Yngwie plays with more style, the Amott brothers are heavier, Herman Li plays crazier and Buckethead is wilder and more eccentric. I think Petrucci is great, the first two Dream Theater albums were landmarks, but I wasn't as impressed with either his solo album (too much like a ripoff of Morse's Southern Steel) or the one he did with Jordan Rudess. Liquid Tension Experiment was great though.

As far as best? I can't define best. Who's the most technically diverse? Maybe Eric Johnson or Steve Morse or even Brian Setzer. Brian May has a knack for writing melodies that come from outer space and yet sound so familiar at the same time. Larry Carlton has the best touch ever. Michael Amott is the best songwriter/melodic shredder I've ever heard. Buckethead is the fastest. Eddie Van Halen is probably the most inventive.

But yeah, Petrucci is a great guitar player.

Nope, don't think so man. eric clapton is the best guitar player on the planet. did you ever see that 70's episode when eric and hyde are asked to draw what ever come's to mind when they think about 'god' and they both drew eric clapton. have you ever heard of jimi hendrix? led zepplin? lynard skynard? the stones? how 'bout the beatles? yeah...that's what i thought. kids these days (you can't tell but im shaking my head in disappointment). maybe next time when you ask a question, you may want to think it through first.
