There was a feature film about this - may have been by Michael Winner. It was a satire of sorts. In the film there was a referendum for all major decisions, and millions of postmen employed delivering millions of voting slips. The theme was that having referenda for everything couldn't work. But it could still be better to have more mps that didn't belong to political parties, ie. independents.

You need a controlling group, if this group has similar values then it makes governing easier.

Referrendum are a good way of getting the voters to back plans, but they are costly. The labour government has held more Referrendum's than any other government in history, and still we want more.

A single referrendum costs about £2,000 per person to run, if you had one a month that would be £24,000 per person per year needed to come from our taxes.

The British people are too ignorant to participate in referendae on serious issues. The best selling newspaper in this country is The Sun and the second best is the Daily Mail. That tells me that British people are not competent enough to do that!

(I am British, unfortunately, so don't slag me off and accuse me of being American.)

the government pass thousands of laws and make thousands of decisions. Would you really want to have a referendum for each one? I don't think ik could be bothered with that

I'm afraid that wouldn't be democratic, we'd probably become a dictatorship, wouldn't be a bad thing in my mind

Very nice. However you would not get enough people of the same mind to do it.

Last time I checked, it wasn't a democracy. It was a parlimentary monarchy there...I could be wrong.
