What are some good reasons to get a cell phone?

My dad wont let me get one and all my friends have one. I told them the whole "emergency" thing and he's like..then we'll get you a phone that just calls me or mom. But i dont want that. He said it's just a convinence not something I need. and i know he's right and all but still i want one soo badd. Please help!! thanks!! :]].

he's probably worried about the cost. most all cell phone plans today have packages with unlimited minutes. there are also prepaid phones out there. you really should have one. want me to talk to your dad? i'll use my cell phone. i have a bunch of unlimited minutes.

There really aren't any good reasons.

You don't need one. Most people don't-- the only exceptions are on-call doctors and the like.

Cell phones are merely for entertainment value. Staying in touch witih people is fun.

You could earn the money and get a prepaid phone, telling him it's for entertainment (no "it's for emerencies" BULL.. we don't buy that non-sense) and insure him that you'll pay for it. If you don't re-fill the prepaid phone, it'll naturally expire. If you use up all of the minutes, it will not work until you add more money. That will limit the cost issue here.

I have one but emergencies is the best and only real reason I can come up with. Mine sits turned off in my car 90% of the time.

Hmmmmm -

I don't think he can get one that calls just him or mom, but -
What if you need to be picked up from a date? Or - what if your in a situation that you need his advice? If you gain his trust and be adult about it - he should give in.

Are you willing to pay for it? If so, try to negotiate with him. Offer to take on extra chores or to maintain a good grade point average.
