I think it's a heart but this ♥ looks much better. (It's 'alt 3' by the way)

Its supposed to be a sideways heart, similar to the sideways smileys people have been using since to don of time. Lots of scene kids use it as the 27th letter of the alphabet....
Example:
"Scene_xxx<3333Kidd908: like ya mii bf who livezzz_x in england is gunna come and ;;;;;;;;;;;
mosh with us 2morrow!1111111!<3333333333333<3333333"

It's supposed to be a sideways heart, but I'd have to agree with anyone (like you) who says it looks like a butt. Lol. It's really kinda dumb. I like this one much better: â¥
