You should really ask your doctor about this. They are the most reliable source of information.

They do affect the effectiveness of the pill. This is not an old wives tale. You will need to use a back up method of birth control while taking the antibiotic and continue with a back up method for one week after the antibiotic. If you call your pharmacy they will be able to explain to you what causes to antibiotic to do this.

It's not on an old wives tale, it's true. Antibiotics decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills. If you have are having sex, I would suggest that you have a back up method just in case.

This is actually a question that is difficult to answer because it hasn't been well studied. It wouldn't exactly be easy to get a group of women on the pill to take antibiotics and see if they end up pregnant.
However, there have been reports of women, on the pill, becoming pregnant while taking antibiotics. The list of antibiotics that have been seen to interfere does include Amoxocillin.
Antibiotics that have been shown to interact with birth control pills include rifampin (brand name Rifadin), penicillin (Veetids), amoxicillin (Amoxil), ampicillin (Omnipen), cotrimoxazole (Septra or Bactrim), tetracycline (Sumycin), minocycline (Minocin), metronidazole (Flagyl), and nitrofurantoin (Macrobid or Macrodantin).
In my opinion it's simply better to be safe than sorry. If you don't want to risk getting pregnant, I'd use a backup method until you start your new pack of pills.

Yes and no. With the new types of antibiotics coming out nowadays, a lot of them don't interfere with birth control anymore. It also depends what birth control you're on. Certain antibiotics interfere with ceratin types of birth control pills.
If you're worried, it's always better to ere on the side of caution. We usually say to use a backup method for the rest of your pill pack. If you just started a pack, it means the entire pack. If you're on reminder pills, it means the whole next pack.
Again, check with a doctor or pharmacist on specific brands.

Antibiotics interfere with oral contraceptives. You should use a backup method while taking antibiotics and until the end of the month you finish antibiotics in order to prevent unintended pregnancy.

you should really ask your doctor, but i'm almost sure antibiotics don't mix well with the pill. it lessens the pill's effectiveness... at least that's what my dr told me. i had a real bad ear infection about 2 months ago, he told me to use backup method of protection while i took the medicine
