What research would you have that refutes this?

Scientists are saying it's a threat. Here's the article-

"New research is raising concerns that global warming may be triggering a self-perpetuating climate time bomb trapped in once-frozen permafrost.
As the Earth warms, greenhouse gases once stuck in the long-frozen soil are bubbling into the atmosphere in much larger amounts than previously anticipated, according to a study in Thursday's journal Nature.

Methane trapped in a special type of permafrost is bubbling up at a rate five times faster than originally measured, the journal said.

Scientists are fretting about a global warming vicious cycle that had not been part of their already gloomy climate forecasts: Warming already underway thaws permafrost, soil that had been continuously frozen for thousands of years."

Andy I won't say it's not reliable but I'll say this. It's OUTDATED. Your article was "Date Last modified: Jan 26, 2001." Hello this is 2006. USA Today is quoting a scientifically reputable journal called Nature. So your argument against the USA Today doesn't hold. Please bring a more current source to our attention.

Cambion we don't care about the "distant past." We care about global warming and today.

Big Red Dawg 43 wrong. Alaska is on the hit list-

"Vladimir Romanovsky, geophysics professor at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks, said he thinks the big methane or carbon dioxide release hasn't started yet, but it's coming. It's closer in Alaska and Canada, which only has a few hundred square miles of yedoma, he said."

Wrong Cambion the distant past does not relate to today when other things like humans speeding up the warming process are involved. I like how you assume I'm going to give the 10 to a liberal. Sad for you but I don't work that way. I see people as individuals and the 10 will go to the person who answers the question taking all the evidence out there. Here's the proof for current causes of global warming- "Another study earlier this summer in the journal Science found that the amount of carbon trapped in this type of permafrost — called yedoma — is much more prevalent than originally thought and may be 100 times the amount of carbon released into the air each year by the burning of fossil fuels."
100 times the amount than the past so stick your head out of the past and figure out what's going on today.

of course it's a threat. And i disagree with the kid who said they don't know if it's natural or non natural. This is non-natural. The speed at which change is occuring is incredible and to deny the fact that humans have played little or no part in this change is absurb and frankly bush-esque.

Since the 1800's man has continously pumped incredible amounts of Carbon dioxide into the atmosphere whilst simulteanously cutting the vast expanses of rainforests. We know scientifically that carbon dioxide acts as an insulator and one of the main sources of removing carbon dioxide are trees, greenery. Are you seriously telling me that in 1700 the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere was the same as what it is now? Such a thought is naive to the greatest extreme. Cars, factories, an explosive increase in human population have resulted in the huge increase in CO2 and with fewer trees countering this then of course global warming will continue to become a threat.

I feel sorry for our kids,

Global-warming as you greenie libs view it is a myth. Three studies thus far have indicated the north pole was a nice warm 74 degrees year round as far as 55 million years ago. So pray tell what were the huminoids of that time driving around in to cause it to be so warm? Answer, NOTHING!

The Earth has a cycle, like it or not. We've had ice ages, and we've warmed out of them. What we are seeing is a continuing end to the last ice age and no matter what we do, we will NEVER stop the polar cap from melting, and the temperature will return to that nice balmy 74 degrees.

Hear's a thought for you to chew on; Carbon-dioxide, greenies claim, is the number one cause of "global warming". It's also the gas we humans exhale. So do us a favor and why don't you and your fellow libs stop breathing. It may buy us a bit more time before we face the inevitable.

Oh... and dope-head... you should care about the distant past because it's PROOF that your global-warming conspiracy is a total crock. Keep your best-answer points for one of your fellow kool-aid guzzlers because I don't want it!

YAWN...... go back to high school and EARN your diploma.

30 years ago they thought we be in an ice age now because of "global cooling" They have also found prove that at a period in time the north and south pole were actually quite warm. What about hurricanes they are susposed to be stronger than last years Hurricane Katrina because the Gulf of Mexico is suppose to be warmer we should of had a storm stronger than Hurricane Katrina. This sight tells you why it is not real.

This is just another weather cycle. Maybe it also has something to do with the increase in solar flare activity. If man cannot make it rain or stop raining on demand, how can he control the climate?

"Is it purely a accident that the earth began to signifigantly heat basically because of the fact the commercial revolution began?" in case you attempt to link human strikes because of the fact the commercial revolution to worldwide warming, are you able to delight clarify how human strikes led to the medieval heat era?? "Even Bush placed the polar bear on the endangered species record because of the melting ice." No, it became into recomended. it is no longer yet on the endagered species record, because of the fact the scientists take approximately one twelve months to pass in the time of the documentation to make specific this is technology and not environmentalism making the selection. "The earth is in temperature cycles that final 1000's of years. we are nowhere close to the tip of our contemporary climate degree, yet republicans declare that it is organic. it is the 1st time in history that the temperature cycle has replaced. it is going to be some thosand greater years till the earth starts off warming. worldwide warming isn't organic!" Wow.....you rather have not study any of the technology have you ever? confident larger common cycles final 1000's or 1000's of years, yet have distinctive temp fluctations interior them. the only given is that all of us be attentive to what got here approximately in the previous, and that isn't let us know what is going to take place sooner or later, besides the fact that environmentalists will attempt to tell you in a distinctive way. worldwide warming is organic, or we does not have had comparable sessions for the era of history. "open your eyes, this warming sort is in assessment to the different." No, this is resembling others, study the documents. "ninety% of glaciers are shrinking." a hundred% of glaciers are constantly changing their length....... "relaxing actuality - sort of flora and fauna preserves clinton opened - 203 sort of flora and fauna preserves bush opened - 2" What does this ought to do with worldwide warming? better relaxing actuality is that Bush's living house in Texas is greater capability effectual then Al Gore's. "Is a ford expedition fairly neccesary republicans? I specific see alot of you driving them" And Al Gore flies in a private airplane. Planes use lots greater gasoline then ford expeditions..... basically, you attempt to lame the blame of international warming on Republicans, it is a snigger. awaken, study the technology, and comprehend that by making use of attempting to politicize this undertaking, you will at last reason it to grow to be trivial by the years!!

Then move to Alaska. They have several million years before the warming get there.

Of course it is a threat. And of course it is warming. The question is whether it is man made any more than the various ice ages and subsequent warmings were, and frankly, there is no proof one way or the other.
