Ivory traditionally comes from the tusks of elephants. When carved ivory became coveted by Europeans, elephants were killed by the hundreds only for their ivory, their corpses left to rot. Ivory is also obtained from walrus tusks, and the tusk-like "horn" or the narwhal, a small arctic whale.
