No, as a musician and song writer, I'm not into writing filth, but if someone else wants to, that's OK (Bob Dylan wrote some of the most hurtful and hateful things without using foul language). Parents need to know what their kids are listening to, it's not the government's place. If they step up and rate it, how long do you think it will be before they control what can and can't be said in music? I'm not opposed to a rating system as long as it's done by the music industry, that would make the most sense.
As a side note, lets not forget how the US government tried to stamp out rock and roll: Drafting Elvis, the whole Louie Louie controversy, Nixon's attempts to get rid of (deport) John Lennon, the unexplained popularity of Pat Boone...

I'm 64 years old and I'm becoming afraid by how much the government intervenes in our lives nowadays. I don't like some of the lyrics on some music, but I think that should be rated by the business (Kind of like the fox watching the hens!). So NO. The government is not supposed to police everything we do. We elected them so it should show we have some concept of what is going on in the world - true or not - and of right and wrong. Good luck with your debate.

Let's see how it would work if the goverment would start rating music or movies.
First, they would have to debate it for several years to pass a bill in order to do it, which would cost us tax payer's a ton of money. Then, they would have several subcommity meetings to decide on the rating system and how best to organize it, so that will cost us a lot more tax money. After that they will set up this big branch that is filled with plenty of red tape and morons that can't find their butt with both hands and help from someone else to actually do the work.

I do not believe the government should rate music because that seems to be on the border of infringing on the freedom of speech. Some may argue that it helps parents monitor what their children listen to but if parents are that concerned they will go to the music stores that let you listen to parts of the songs on a cd before you buy it. besides, there already is the explicit lyrics label that comes on many cd's anyways so why do we have to let the government go farther with that?

Are you talking about a decency rating, like for movies? Movie ratings are not done by the government. They are done by the Motion Picture Association of America. The government should not be involved in rating things, because that could lead to censorship, which would be a violation of our freedom of speech.

no!! I don't think it should be rated. I think it's a good idea to have the Parental advisory on the CD's, so that kids can't buy music that is offensive or have lots of profanity. As a parent now, I appreciate that.

Ohhhh - this is a tough one.....
I was certainly surprised to be carded for the purchase of a CD, but as a Mom I can understand why - especially raising boys - some of those lyrics depicting women are horrible! If that is they're only involvement - I say yes.

A conservative republican would think that less government is better government.
A liberal democrat would think that big government should solve all its citizens problems.
So from a conservative republican--and I am NOT talking about George W. Bush, less government is better government. No music ratings.
