Just tell them you were always taught if you had nothing nice to say then don't say anything at all,and leave it at that. :)

yeah i got that a lot when i was at school. but when i went out to work things changed and my confidence grew, i know how you feel when you get that question, it makes you even quieter, and makes you feel really nervous.
some people are really loud and others quiet its not a problem when they say why are you so quiet you could try saying why are you so loud, but if your anything like me then you probably wouldnt have the confidence to say that unless it was like your best mate asking.
but trust me things will change before you realise it you will be quietly confident. you wont be shy forever its a thing you grow out of. i never thought i would have the confidence to go and work in a bar in spain and get people into the pubs doing P.R work but am leaving in march to go and do it and trust me i was probably quieter and even more shy than you. dont try and change yourself but you will change just take things easy for now, i bet your fine talking to some people and then really quiet towards others, if so then your already halfway there. hope you feel better about yourself! xxx

Give them a really WHACKY answer and they'll think you're weird and leave you alone... that's what I do... I'm quiet and shy also (because I'm pretty tired of other humans) and when they ask why am I so quiet, I'll say something like, "Well, because the little voice in my head says that if I talk, I'll lay a very large egg and then the dragon in the egg will eat me." Yeah... That usually gets them. Also, it adds to your personality! LOL...

tell them

you will speak when there is something to say, other than that, you are not the type of person to ramble on about useless things

that may come off a bit pompous but hey. It is what it is.

Im not shy, but I am quiet. There are a select few that can get my mouth runnin

If that is really who you are, then do not force yourself into a change. Else you will only get boisterous and unpleasant because you would say things you shouldn't.

If someone asks you that next time, tell them "Give me one good reason or topic to talk about and we can chat the whole day!"
Good luck!!

haha, i use to hear that alot aswell, sometimes i would stay in complete silence as if i didnt hear the question, or farted, or saying no reason, or because i like it quiet, also i dont know, or i forgot, or because if i talk it causes my throat to bleed, or i said i talk just not to you, i forgot most of what i use to say to though. nothing really too clever, im not clever it seems

It is better to remain silent and thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

Or you can say this:

"Some people keep on talking because they want to be heard...even when they have nothing to say."

Try responding with humour and they may stop. For example say that someone sewed your lips together.
