That's a great question. I think that you are right on target. Was it Joseph Stalin who said that religion is "an opiate for the masses"? And I think you are right on both counts - some of them are psychopathic - the ones who use religion to manipulate. And some are delusional, like the religious zealouts. I have worked as a mental health worker all of my life and I truly think that religion does more harm to a person's mental health than good. Spirituality, or a belief in the connectedness of all of life, is not what I am talking about here. Spirituality is personal between an individual and their idea of who god is. That only has good outcomes and can be extremely rewarding. I think your question is very provocative, in a good way. It will be interesting to see what responses you get. I'll bet you touch a few nerves.

Well God gets blamed for everything, and if these so called leaders had an idea about God they would understand that killing people on a daily basis is really not part of the divine plan for humanity. Serial killers are beginning to look like a day at the beach compared to what these people in power inflict on men, women and children in these so called wars to keep peace. War has always been about money, and in todays world, oil is money.
I do not think God really gives a damn about the oil and greedy politicians. So, no, God is not on their side, but they have to tell the public something to convince us to keep voting for them.
What is the public's reaction when a story hits the media about a person why decides to kill, rape, torture in some psychotic state and his line of defense is "God told me do this"?? The public would be outraged and yet every day on this planet our government officials in power do this to humanity and we as a society think they our protecting us from evil. Very strange paradox. I think God looks down at us and thinks we are crazed.

Many leaders use this just to get the support of the religious mass, which is quite a large group in most countries. I doubt that most of the leaders actually believe this.

Power makes them dizzy if you know what I mean. As if they have had a bit too much booze and then their decisions are not the best. Many are psychopathic.

Some really believe it, some don't. Who says that God is helping any of them? If you are bombing or killing for Jesus, even if you are the President (or a terrorist), God is not going to help you kill people. That's not his message. God is a pacifist.

i don't know but it is always easier to get people to agree with a war and fighting for a cause if they believe God is on their side because God would not let you loose.
