I have related stories and anecdotes to people who always come back with - you should write a book. I would love to and know it would be funny but have no confidence in my ability to do it. How do I start? Any suggestions?

Just start. Don't concentrate on "writing a book", just write. See what happens. Keep track of ideas. If it's meant to be, it will come together eventually, but that can never happen if you don't begin.

3. Keep it up for months until you have enough stuff to call it a book. Difficulty: Screaming Bloody Murder

First, stop trying to judge the contents of your book before you even put it down. That is what is stopping you.

Write or type the stories down, keep at it. Take the time you need to write them. Do not judge the material. If you find you think it is bad, put it down and come back another day.

I also feel like I should write a book. I needed to get my computer fixed first. I have not gotten an idea that is strong enough to write more than a page yet.

Good luck.

Record a few of these stories and anecdotes on paper, or computer, or whatever floats your boat. File them away and keep adding to it. Then when the file gets nice and bulky, read through them all and organise them. Make a list of each story and group them together.

Then think of a story that could incorporate the gist of each piece as a lot of subplots that build up into a larger story. You don't have to use them all.

Think of it as a stone block that you have to chip at till you get a sculpture.

You need to write something every day, get into the habit.
It need not be much, but get over the fear of the blank page. Try writing something you have told many times and refine it so it reads and flows well.
Do not think in terms of a book, think of it as a small section at a time and it will grow.

Depends how much spare time you got. You can decide what you want to write about and plan out the start and the finish. You can start and when you have nothing left stop. I have been writing one for 5 years. Its time. If you can sit down every day and just do it the best. Wish you luck.

I noticed recently, the local Adult Education classes held a day on exactly that...how to write a book. This could be a good start to begin with?

first of all jot down all of your ideas and then try to make links between them, that way you will have the beginnings of the layout of the book, then just start writing and see how you do. I don't think there is any particular way of writing a book, just about finding you preffered way of writing

If you're self-conscious about what you're writing and can never seem to get it right then do it on your PC in a word processor or text editor (for getting thoughts down the latter is probably better).

Just do stream of consciousness stuff, you can sort it out and revise to your heart's content later.

Enjoy.

Get a note book and every time you remember bits and pieces jot them down. Then start with your earliest memory, all the rest will follow once you start, good luck,!!!
