It's all about science and human nature my friend. Men are pre-programmed to have an emotional response to physical beauty. It has been well documented and proven by science. Women do not have the same response to a good looking man and usually have a hard time understanding why we have to look. You can't beat yourself senseless over your biological programming. You have to accept it and move on. It will never stop, no matter which super model you are married to....It's the natural urge to pro-create because of their physical characteristics.

What makes a real man is the ability to recognize, admire and then leave it alone. And that part is the hardest.

For the simple reason that all humans are genetically born that way... I mean, seriously I would be lying if I said that I never give a second glance at a hot specimen of a man, lol ;)
The same response goes to not some but MOST straight, testosterone males. It exists even in the animal kingdom, where colors, are used to attract potential mates.
In relationships, men gravitate more toward beauty (this has been scientifically proven) to further seal the possibility of having attractive offspring.
However, how beauty is perceived differs for each individual. What may seem beautiful to the person may seem unattractive to everyone else.

There are cultural and social preferences that control small aspects of beauty, but for the most part beauty from a anthropologicial sense is pre-programmed into humans and it all has to do with survival of the species. In general most traits that men find attractive in women have to do with a woman's ability to produce a child and her general health.

Child birth was an enormously difficult procedure for early man and if a woman was healthy and had a body type that facilitated child birth (wide hips, proper nourishment, breast development, etc) then the chances of successful childbirth was higher. Sex drive is purely a natural function to propogate the species. The only reason we are here is because early humans had sex drive. Women who were healty and have specific easier birth body types lived through child birth at a higher rate and as a result that general health and body type got carried down genetically. A sexual selection took place were women who were more cabable of giving birth and living to care for and nourish the child were sought out by early man. They became desireable.

So men all have this pre-wired sense to search out beauty (aka health and better ability to give birth) as a carry over from the need to keep the species going. Similarly, the traits in men that women are generally attracted to are condusive of a healthy male that would be physically able to protect and provide for the woman and the child.

Our notions of beauty are rooted in sexual selection when early humans sought out ideal partners from a practical sense and those traits got reproduced.

Human beings are programed to be attracted to beauty.
Interestingly, there was a study suggesting that even cute kids will get treated better by their teachers that the "ugly" ones.
But the concept of what is beautiful is very malleable. A person who at first sight might be viewed as ugly, can it time be seen as beautiful to those around him/her if they are known to possess wonderful characteristics such as kindness.
