Unless you have a Wireless Router you can not legally and securely connect your laptop to your network. It sounds like you are piggybacking on someone else's wireless network which is why it is not SECURE.

If you want to create a wireless network of your own you need to add a WAP (Wireless Access Point) to your wired router and then enable either WEP or WPA security (WPA is more secure), then you can connect securely without "borrowing" somebody else's wireless connection.

(Look on your router, if it does not have a WiFi symbol or led light on it (in additon to the WAN and 1 - 4 led lights) they you have just a plain wired router (broadband or gateway), and you will need to add a WAP to it. If yours does have WiFi then you need to enable it and enable the security level for it.)

I've been working with wireless networks since 801.11b cost £75, you cant connect to a wired router without an access point, you seem to be connected to someone elses network (which they forgot to add encryption), buy an access point, it should have a RJ45 socket in it, connect that to your router, name your SSID, set your encryption and use a passpharse on the access point.

you will now find it says something like limited conectivity, that's good, the encryption is working, however to connect, reuse the passphrase when asked by either the the windows wireless zero management utility, or perferably use the software that came with your wireless antena/adapter and use the passphrase there.

you may have to set a gateway depending, but I never did since I use an all in one wireless router myself, they usually have four RJ45 ports in the back and can be configured exactly like an access point.

whether you wish to replace your router or not, you still need to buy the hardware (either access point or wireless router)

Your best route is the find documentation for your laptop and router. Some laptops just use Windows to connect wireless, other like HP use Atheros.
I would assume you are using Windows due to the error you received. This is a link to a Microsoft site with information on that error.

You may need to enable the zero configuration utility built into windows xp here are the steps

If your computer or your wireless network adapter did not come with its own wireless network software, follow these steps:
1.Click Start, click Run, type ncpa.cpl, and then click OK.
2.Click Network Connections.
3.In Network Connections, click to select your wireless connection, and then click Change settings of this connection.
4.On the Wireless Networks tab, click to select the Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings check box.

To start the Wireless Zero Configuration service, follow these steps:
1.Click Start, click Run, type %SystemRoot%\system32\services.msc /s, and then click OK.
2.Double-click Wireless Zero Configuration.
3.In the Startup type list, click Automatic, and then click Apply.
4.In the Service status area, click Start, and then click OK.
