Yes, I knew that. There is also a theory that it comes from a French phrase -- pirates or buccaneers would cook goat meat by impaling a goat on a spit and roasting it over an open fire. The goats were impaled "de la barbe au cul" (from beard to butt) and thus barbe-cul = barbecu = Barbecue (the "L" in cul is silent in French). Although the origin of the word is still debated, the practice of barbeque is generally agreed to have originated in the Carribbean.

Which in turn came from from the Arawakan (Haiti) word barbakoa which was the raised wooden structure the Indians used to either sleep on or cure meat.
