Honestly, it depends on the 18 yr old. If they are quite tall, are over the weight limit for the bed, or you have low ceilings, it may not be a great idea. Many college students "loft" their beds in order to make the most out of the little space they have. I used one when I was in college and it was great. Good thing I am not afraid of heights. depends on the size of the bed. If it was a twin I would say no. If this is for college I would say it's a good idea to have a loft bed with just the bed on the top so you could put a desk underneath

Bunk Beds are all the rage at Parris Island, USMC training facility. If they're good enough for the jarheads, they're good enough for anybody.
