Ex. 4/5-1/2
first u gotta line them up side by side
then u gotta get a common denominator
4/5=8/10
1/2=5/10
then just subtract the stuff on top
answer: 3/10
hope this helps

The trick to subtracting or adding fractions is that the denominator (the part under the line) has to be the same. So if they are different numbers you have to find a common denominator.
Let's take
3/8 minus 1/6
The 8 is the denominator for 3/8
and the 6 is the denominator for 1/6
You want to find the common denominator for the 8 and the 6, which means a number that both can be multiplied into.
You can start with 8X6 which is 48 (because that number is common for both).
But wait, is there a lower number that both can go into?
Try half of 48, which is 24, can 8 be multiplied into 24? Yes
Can 6 be multiplied into 24? Yes.
Is there any number below 24, that both 8 and 6 can be multiplied into? (check them out one by one to double check)? No
So, using
3/8 we want to change the bottom to 24, 8 goes into 24 3 times.
so we need to multiply both the 3 and the 8 by 3. So your fraction is now
(3)x3
____
(3)x8
that will now become 9/24
Let's go to the second fraction and multiply that one as well into 24
That fraction as you will remember is 1/6, we want the bottom number to become 24 as well. So we need to multiply both parts by 4
so
(4) x 1
_____
(4) x 6
becomes
4/24
so now we have a common denominator for both.
ONCE YOU HAVE A COMMON DENOMINATOR
9/24 - 4/24
We only subtract the numerators. 9-4 = 5
so our problem becomes
5/24
Can you simplify 5/24? it has to be a common number for both. 5/24 cannot be simplified
So the answer becomes
3/8 - 1/6 =
9/24 - 4/24 =
5/24
Good luck

3/4 - 1/2 you need to make the denominators (the bottom numbers 4 and 2 the same). you always make them both the higher number, which is 4 in this case. so now it's changed them to 3/4 - 1/4 - you also double the 1 to 2. so you have 3/4 - 2/4. subtract the 2 from the 3 and you get 1 so the answer is 1/4. hope this helps.

First you need to make common denominators (the same bottom numbers)
1/2 - 1/4 = 2/4 - 1/4 = 1/4
4/9 - 1/3 = 4/9 - 3/9 = 1/9
3/5 - 2/7 = 21/35 - 10/35 = 11/35
Good luck...

subtracting fractions is relatively easy. just find a common denominator and subtract the top numbers. then simplify is neccessary
ex. 11/32 - 3/16 = ?
the common denominator is 32.
so.... 11/32 - 6/32(multiply both top and bottom by 2 to get 32 for your denominator) = ?
answer is..... 11/32 - 6/32 = 5/32 (11-6=5)
does this help?

First the important thing is to make sure that they fractions are the same, that is you can't take away eightths from halfs or thirds from quarters. Change them so they all have the same number on the bottom, that is a common denominator. Then take away. Go to www.bbc.co.uk/schools to get more help.

i have trouble too
10 5 5
---- - ---- = -----
20 10 10
Wait go with the guy right under me. he explains it better!
Because 10 - 5 = 5 and 20- 10 = 10. If u simplify, it = 1 half
Hope This Helped!
