I live in southern california and I was wondering if up and moving to New York to pursue stage acting is the best move to start a career in theater arts.

The best way to start a career in theatre is to get a degree in theatre. You make connections that way. If you don't have a degree in theatre and can't afford to get one, then try to get work at local theaters. You will meet people that way, and things will build from there. Connections and studies are the MOST important things in this god-forsaken business!
Just moving to NYC won't help. It is an extremely competitive area, and is difficult to get a job in. Don't forget the other areas of the country that are rich in theatre as well, if you feel you HAVE to leave Cali right now. Seattle has the best children's theatre in the country. Chicago has an amazing arts scene. Boston. Toronto, Canada. Washington D.C. has a decent scene.

This has been asked so many times it's moldy. You need to begin in high school plays, then community theater, then take performance art classes, and then meet the right people because it isn't WHAT you know but WHO you know. And let me clue you in on something. Thousands of people who moved to either NY or LA, are now waiting tables for a living while living in awful places and hoping for that big chance that will probably never come. Not impossible, but the odds are NOT in your favor. First, you must prove yourself in local theater.

start with small plays put on in local theatres...get some practice
after all, nobody tries out for the Yankees without getting to know everything about baseball, do they?

Try economically booming india. they recruit online at www.baajaa.com for tv actors and actresses. And they have openings for all types.
