7-8 hours is average (some people can get by on less), but you can go into sleep defecit for quite a while and still perform tasks well, but you must "make it up" later.

If you sleep 6-8 hours and get quality sleep- meaning sleeping comfortable so you aren't tossing and turning and staying asleep the whole night, you will wake up feeling great if you get enough quality sleep.
