Hi, My boyfriend and I have a 99 Ford Escort and have gotten the alternator and batterty replaced within this past year. The car runs great and never has any other problems. But recently he was driving the car and it stalled, but before it stalled the radio was shutting on and off and the gages were going up and down like the car was possessed!!! Last time it did this a year ago, it was the alternator and that was fixed. Does anyone have any idea's of what this sounds like before we take it from shop to shop to have it looked at?? Thank you!!!!

Check for a short somewhere, Advance Auto Parts will do some simple battery alternator checking for you, and for free. I think Auto Zone does some free checks too, but I like Advance better, so I don't know about Auto Zone.

Also sounds like you may need a tune up in addition, wires plugs, air cleaner. etc.

first try starting the car and taking the positive abbtery terminal off while the car is running. If the engine dies your altanator has gone bad again. If the engine keeps running the altinator is fine, either the battery is going flat or there is a short in the voltage regulator.

I just had this happen to me. The mechanic fixed the crank adjuster. It took 10 minutes. Good Luck!

Duh if it's your alternator your car wouldn't start firstly. 2nd you could need thermostat, car could be over heating, something blocking the fuel line, torque converter could be shot....there could be lots of things, but take it to a place like Monroe or Midas or someplace that has free estimates then call around for pricing.
Or see if you know someone that can fix the item.
