Even though it doesn't show, your bf parents' genes have a light eye gene (b) Those can be inherited from way back in the family line, like a great great great whatever!..However, brown eyes (B) have dominance over light eyes. For example, his parents both had to be Bb in order for him to come out with light eyes, which makes him a (bb). In biology we use a punnett square to express this stuff. But i'm the same, both my sister and i have green eyes and our parents have brown. Cool Stuff!

From a Wikipedia entry about eyes:
Three gene pairs coding for human eye color are currently known.
This model can partially explain how two brown-eyed parents can give birth to a blue-eyed child. Also Caucasian babies are often born with blue eyes which turn brown as they get older. However this may not always occur because of genetic damage or environmental factors. If such a person has a child with another blue-eyed person then that child may inherit the gene for brown eyes.
Eye color typically stabilizes by 6 years of age.

Well, my father is Cherokee and my mother is Portuguese. EVERYONE in my family has eyes that are so dark brown, they are practically black. I, however, have green. It is supposed to be "cherokee" color, in fact, I had an eye doctor tell me that I had unusual eyes, like cherokee. There may just be one of those silly little recessive genes floating around from way back somewhere.

His Mom had a recessive gene (blue is recessive) and so did his Dad. This leaves a 25% chance one of thier offspring will have blue eyes-that's your boyfriend.

This is really strange as i checked this out before - two brown eyed people cannot have a blue - eyed baby, but two blue - eyed people can have a brown - eyed baby as brown is the dominant gene. Unless his mother had an affair! (only a thought!)
